Sometimes you do a project that opens doors for you. Submitting to the Durham Art Banners contest became that project for me. Durham started doing murals in the parks last summer, I wanted to submit, but life happened and I missed the deadline. That’s why I was happy to get an email from the Durham Public Art Office late fall asking if I could help them out.
This project places a lot of importance on community feedback, which I am perfectly comfortable with. The community asked for a design that reflected the three main sports played at the park (tennis, soccer, and baseball) and the age-diversity of the people using it. They also asked for all four walls to be incorporated, and a color palette to be similar to the one used in the banners. The project has completed the design and review stages, below is my final submission.
It took 3 weeks to paint the murals using Montana 94 spray paint. It is an excellent quality paint, easy to control, lots of color options, good coverage and durability. I used yellow universal caps form SprayPlanet for most of it, they worked great for both lines and fills. Below are images of the final result.
