Location: Whipporwill Park, Durham NC.
Sometimes you do a project that opens doors for you. Submitting to the Durham Art Banners contest became that project for me. Durham started doing murals in the parks last summer, I wanted to submit, but life happened and I missed the deadline. That’s why I was happy to get an email from the Durham Public Art Office late fall asking if I could help them out.
This project places a lot of importance on community feedback, which I am perfectly comfortable with. The community asked for a design that reflected the three main sports played at the park (tennis, soccer, and baseball) and the age-diversity of the people using it. They also asked for all four walls to be incorporated, and a color palette to be similar to the one used in the banners. The project has completed the design and review stages, below is my final submission. The installation is planned for May, 2019.
